Colossal Creators Sued by Toho

This is probably the saddest story of the day. The Japanese Film Studio Toho, famously known for creating the record-long running Godzilla series, has filed a lawsuit against Voltage Pictures.

The (hopefully) upcoming kaiju film Colossal is being sued for a total of $150,000, listing a number of reasons mostly relating to copyright infringement. The claim states that Voltage is producing a Godzilla film on their own, without any authorization from Toho or Legendary Pictures, and that they “intend to use the Godzilla character in precisely the same way that Toho used the character in its initial film – attacking Tokyo

The film, which is currently looking for investors in Cannes, is set to star Anne Hathaway as Gloria, who discovers that she shares some mystical mental link with a monster running rampant in Tokyo. It’s scheduled to begin production on September 14th.

Although, as much as I’d like to see this project happen, there is some hard evidence against it. Not only did Voltage send out a mail to potential investors using a picture from the 2014 Godzilla movie, they also dropped the G-bomb in the plot description itself.

Ya dun goofed, Voltage.

Ya dun goofed, Voltage.

It also doesn’t help that the director, Nacho Vigalondo, was claiming just last year that he was gonna make the cheapest Godzilla movie ever. Sadly, with this new price tag, that may prove a bit more of a challenge.
